I don’t think cats get enough credit for how incredibly smart and connected to us they are. I know dogs are, and so does everyone, but with cats, I’m always astounded by how much soul they have.
Perfect example happened to me yesterday.
I had taken my cat to the humane society for neutering/microchipping ((which was a hell of a time since the staff are no where CLOSE to organized and it was actually connected to the pet ER where I lost my sweet cat 4 months ago. The vets are complete dicks, but the front staff is very nice. I’ll give them that. I’m going off on this but if you live in Chesapeake, Va. I suggest finding somewhere else to go.)). ((I’ll go bavk to my point.))
Well, since they got a lot of rescue dogs that day, the wait on cats was longer. So, I went to the adoption room where I talked to this lady who was in love with this OMG adorable Siamese kitten.
As we were going in (my friend came with me), the worker warned us: “Watch out for the ginger cat, he likes to swat at people.” So I’m all over every cat like, I want to live there. Lol. Then I see him! Jake!
Up on a cat tower, looking like king of the castle. I go up to him and start scratching his head “ohhhh are you the bad boy here? You’re not the bad boy, you’re a sweet face!” And baby/kitty talking to him as he rolled himself around on the tower as I scratched his head. This went in fir a few minutes.
I move to this kitten that I could weep was so damn cute. But lo! Mr. Jake came up to me, nudging his head at my leg and climbed up on my jeans (claws didn’t touch skin) to get more love.
The staff was amazed! They said he might be like that a second before swiping at people like ‘I’m done with you now’, but he followed me the whole time I was there.
I heard heart wrenching stories that I can’t even type. But here is a warning:
LONG HAIRED CATS ARE BEAUTIFUL OK? BUT IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO GET THEM GROOMED AT LEAST EVERY SIX MONTHS - DO NOT GET ONE. Seriously, even brushing every day will not fully do it. I had a Himalayan and she hated brushing and still got knots which hurt them! They need that lion shave to help.
Back to story: I was going to leave and go back to waiting room and I went to find Jake who was sitting on a chair. I whispered softly to him that I hope he finds a wonderful home and is loved so much and I wish I could have take him. I felt that bond, the trust and fondness he felt for me. But not then.
He knew I was leaving, knew he would be there and I wasn’t going to be. He was not happy. He lifted his paw and gave me this sad/angry look and my heart shattered. (I’m crying as I type now lol…)
I know people crusade for dogs, but cats need it too!!! The sadness I felt in that room was overpowering. All pets: dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, ALL OF THEM, need love. They need commitment. They need love and a forever home. You need to be in it for the long haul, please: don’t let these babies go through this.
I’m not completely misunderstanding in situations where people have no choice. Sometimes it’s for the best for them, but don’t go on a whim when adopting, please. Think 10 years into your future and if you can see yourself still with your pet and no qualms; perfect.
So this was a sweet/sad story and a PSA and I’m not sorry I not going to cut it.
I decided when I go to NJ in Feb, I’m going to volunteer or work at a shelter because they need as much love as they can get.
But my baby, my Voodoo, is doing well, despite insanely hyper and hating being contained lol. I nearly got into a fight with the staff who lost the record of his rabies shot he got 7/29 so he got ANOTHER and they were like “psh it’s ok” as I’m freaking the fuck out. Sigh. Seriously that place is just a wreck. Two at front, two techs, and ONE vet?! There were at least 30 pets worked on that day. Not a good number. And it scared me if they were doing like, quick jobs and I will raise all hell if anything happens to my baby. 😡!
I’m all about the doggies, myself, but Liebe makes exceptional points. Help the kitties, and bunnies, and lizards, and ratties, and /everything/ because they need your love, too.
